1) If the disc bounces out of your hand (provided you catch it on the far side like Rob showed), it will bounce into your body, which means you get a second chance to maybe get it under control.
2) Catching like this also has a natural transition into a good (i.e. well performed, with less chance of injuring yourself) layout.
